We caught up with Tom Collomosse, sports correspondent for the Evening Standard to catch up about; Serie A on Channel 4, brilliant Real Madrid team goals and Giueseppe Giannini.
What was your first football shirt?
Everton NEC one from 1987/88. My cousins were Liverpool fans so I decided to be contrary.
What is your favourite football shirt?
I was a big fan of Giuseppe Giannini during the 1990 World Cup (I was 10 at the time), so I checked which Italian club he played for and started following them. Roma.
Roma, Adidas (source: Old Football Shirts)
This was one of the shirts Roma wore in the years Giannini was running their midfield.
What is your favourite goal?
It’s almost too quick for the eyes.
It is a toss-up between Careca’s goal for Brazil against France in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final, or Cristiano Ronaldo’s for Real Madrid against Ajax in the Champions League group stages in 2011.
I have always preferred team goals to those which simply involve a player whacking the ball into the net from a long way out.
The reason is this: whereas it’s just possible for a Sunday footballer to score a 35-yard volley if they catch it right, to score goals like those I mentioned, you need to have brilliant players and a brilliant team.
It is the fact so few teams could score goals like those that make them so special. It’s a hard call, but I think Careca’s goal just takes it for the speed of thought and movement.
