Yesterday was the anniversary of Gianfranco Zola signing for Chelsea. The little Italian spent seven seasons at Chelsea, scoring 59 goals. The best of all was a piece of magic at home to Norwich.
Zola was in the twilight of his career but orchestrated a 4-0 win. The goal came when Le Saux delivered a corner and Zola produced a delicate flick past the onlooking Rob Green.
Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri was happy
“Fantasy, magic. Only Maradona or Pele – only the big players – would do something like that. Gianfranco tries every thing because he is a wizard and the wizard must try.”
Zola dedicated his goal to a boy he saw in hospital at Christmas but died
“I was touched by the smile he gave me. He was in agony and I hope he will see the goal from wherever he is.”
His job was to entertain
“I think one of my jobs is to entertain.”
