Liverpool have won more than their fair share of FA Cup trophies over the years.
But back in 1988, there was a pretty major upset, when Wimbledon’s “Crazy Gang” spoiled Kenny Dalglish’s side’s chances of winning the double.
Although Laurie Sanchez bagged the only goal of the day, handing Bobby Gould’s side the trophy, Wimbledon played the game everyone expected that side to play, implementing their rough-and-ready style to prevent the First Division champions from playing.
Scroll down to watch Vinnie Jones plough into Steve McMahon…
This was perfectly exemplified by one Vinnie Jones, the poster boy of the team that, thanks to John Motson’s commentary, became known as The Crazy Gang.
Early on in the game, Liverpool had possession of the ball just inside Wimbledon’s half in unthreatening territory. The ball was shifted inside to the waiting Steve McMahon, and just after he offloaded it, Jones steamed in like a freight train and wiped him out.
Here it is in all its gruesome glory:
In the modern game, it would most likely have been a straight red card, but referee Brian Hill just issued a stern word before the game continued.
After John Aldridge saw his penalty saved by Dave Beasant, it became clear the Wimbledon would bring home the bacon.
Who knows what would have happened if Jones was sent for an early bath…
