Manchester United fans love Patrice Evra.
The France defender won five Premier League titles and the Champions League while at Old Trafford, and is one of those players who will always receive a rousing reception when he returns to the club.
And a number of United fans, including his former team-mate Rio Ferdinand, were excited about the prospect of Evra re-joining the club in the January window.
Having fallen out of favour at Juventus, the 35-year-old instead joined Marseille last month, and claimed a second stint at United was blocked by a person he refused to name.
Evra told Sky Italia: “I was very close to a return to Manchester United.
“I also spoke with Mourinho but there was a person, whose name I will not say, who probably did not like the idea of my return.
“Even the fans were enthusiastic and would have been delighted, but because I realised that they [the club] would not do anything I then asked my agent to look for other teams.”
So if it wasn’t Mourinho who put the kibosh on Evra’s transfer back to United, who was it?
