Rob Lee: My favourite Newcastle United shirt

We caught up with ex-Newcastle United and England midfielder Rob Lee to talk about his love of plain shirts, his favourite Newcastle United shirt and watching Roberto Carlos score “that goal” at Le Tournoi.

What was your first football shirt?

I used to really like basic kits.  The Liverpool kit from the 70s that Kevin Keegan wore was class.  Now they’re all multi-coloured.

What is your favourite football shirt?

The favourite football shirt I played in was the Newcastle United granddad collar shirt.   Adidas made on with claret and blue hoops. It was great for me (being from West Ham).  I was playing for a great club in Newcastle but wearing West Ham colours.

What is your favourite goal?

My favourite goal was George Best’s goal for Manchester United v Spurs.  He chested it down.  The keeper parried it out.  He chested it and lobbed it over defenders.  It was absolute class.

The best goal I have seen live was at Le Tournoi.  I was in the England team and were watching Brazil play France.  Roberto Carlos scored his unbelievable free-kick that was going for the corner flag.  I still don’t know how he did it.
