Despite all the new designs and innovations we see each year on kits, sometimes you just can't beat the plain old classics. That's what Rob Lee thinks, as he talked about the plain Liverpool shirts that caught his eye when he was younger.

We caught up with ex-Newcastle United and England midfielder Rob for our My First Football Shirt series to talk about his love of plain shirts, his favourite Newcastle United shirt and watching Roberto Carlos score “that goal” at Le Tournoi.

What was your first football shirt?

I used to really like basic kits. The Liverpool kits from the 70s that Kevin Keegan wore were class! Now they’re all multi-coloured and it isn't quite the same.

What is your favourite football shirt?

My favourite football shirt that I played in was the Newcastle United granddad collar shirt.  Adidas made it and included the claret and blue hoops. It was great for me, because I was from London and supported West Ham. I was playing for a great club in Newcastle but wearing West Ham colours!

    What is your favourite goal?

My favourite goal was George Best’s goal for Manchester United against Spurs.  The keeper parried it out.  He chested it and lobbed it over defenders.  It was absolute class. The best goal I have seen live was at Le Tournoi.  I was in the England team and we were watching Brazil play France. Roberto Carlos scored his unbelievable free-kick that was going for the corner flag.  I still don’t know how he did it.

Thanks to Rob for speaking with us!
